Our Chief Technical Officer Mike Murray took part in Foam Expo Europe’s webinar this week, examining how the PU foam industry could implement a sustainable business continuity strategy in the wake of COVID-19. Alongside a panel of experts, the discussion centred on emerging market trends and product development opportunities for the foam supply chain.

In summary, discussion considered the emergent trend in consumers’ purchasing habits to be increasingly focused on reusability and recycling. Sustainable manufacturing is the new normal for forward-thinking companies and Vita’s recent announcement concerning Renuva raw materials is just one example of how Vita is continuing to invest in innovative ways to support sustainability and the circular economy.

Perhaps the biggest priority during the pandemic has been the health and wellbeing of employees. ‘Safety first’ has been the mantra for The Vita Group and this led to the development of a face covering initially for its employees and now marketed to businesses and individuals. The Vita Group’s continued investment in new innovation centres allows development of products that raise the hygiene and safety standards post-Covid, such as adding anti-microbial benefits to products.

The participants agreed that dealing with the ongoing coronavirus restrictions in business operations was still among the most immediate concerns. Fast-action was currently needed in all business areas to respond to an ever-changing economic climate, with agile companies identified as the best-placed for an effective industry response. The Vita Group’s speedy delivery of key medical supplies such as foam for mattresses in the UK Nightingale hospitals is critical to supporting our hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

The coronavirus pandemic has thrown up many challenges to the business world but it looks like there are also exciting development spaces and emerging technologies within the industry.
