At The Vita Group, we have five key values which lie at the heart of everything we do: Safety, Integrity, Innovation, Responsible, Resourceful.

In this video, Vita’s Group HR Director, Dave Kowal, gives an insight into why Safety is a core value for us and how we can go beyond reducing lost time accidents.

We believe that all accidents can and should be prevented. This is something we address as part of our training and education initiatives and through our range of Safety campaigns.

But at Vita, we want to do more than just avoid accidents; we want to support our employees’ physical and mental wellbeing so they leave the organisation in a better condition than when they first joined.

Five years ago, we launched our safety program, ‘Vita Towards Zero’ which focuses on safety conditions and employee engagement, including all vital safety documentation. While this has provided us with a fantastic foundation upon which to build, we know that the only way to make a real step-change in safety performance is through Behavioural Safety. Over the past three years, we have reduced our Lost Time Incident Frequency rate across the business by 28% by focusing on this core value.

We are now focusing on three key actions through our partnership with DuPont Sustainable Solutions: a safety perception survey to help us understand the safety culture throughout the business, manager & supervisory training and training of safety champions who will then go on to train our employees.

We also invest heavily in staff wellbeing campaigns. During Health Awareness month, we promoted the benefits of physical and mental health awareness. Alongside the business-wide activities, we have developed mental health first aiders so that our people always have someone to go to for support.

Our ambition at Vita is to have a culture where safety is put first, before anything else. Where our employees see that all accidents can be prevented and where, by supporting their physical and mental wellbeing, we make good on our aspiration of Zero Harm.
